Okatibbee Lake was created by impounding the Okatibbe Creek as a U.S. Corps of Engineers project. Authorized by Congress in 1962 primarily for flood reduction, the earthen constructed Okatibbee Dam now stands 72 feet high and stretches 6,620 feet long.

Okatibbe Lake, located a few miles northwest of Meridian in the Pines Region of eastern Mississippi, is a nature lover's retreat and water enthusiast's playground. Situated in Lauderdale County off of State Highway 19, Okatibbe Lake offers 28 miles of shoreline as well as five swimming beaches and a water park.

Factoid: Okatibbee Lake is an 11,000-acre multi-purpose project. The Corps of Engineers maintains one full service campground; four day use parks with three designated swimming areas and four boat ramps. Also, Okatibbee Lake offers excellent hunting opportunities. Okatibbee Lake is a large, beautiful recreational lake with many different parks all around the lake. Its an recreational hot-spot with a range of different activities such as camping, hiking, boating, water skiing, BBQ-ing, fishing, hunting and has its own marina at one of its campgrounds and a few cabins are available as well. A detailed fishing report for the Okatibbee Lake will make the difference between a good fishing here and a bad one.

There are no houses on the lake which gives it a very lush perimeter. We do quite a bit of fishing in the creek bed and the old minnow ponds, but my husband tells me it's some of the hardest fishing he does!
